Common auto electrical jobs in Rainbow Beach
Rainbow Beach has around 1,200 residents but tens of thousands of visitors a year, with the Cooloola section of Great Sandy National Park on its doorstep and K'gari just north. 4WD electrics dominate the work.
Power for days at camp
Whether you're camping on the Inskip Peninsula, on K'gari or along the Cooloola beaches, a fridge running for days is the biggest load on the vehicle. A second battery with a DC-DC charger keeps it running without touching the starting battery, and solar on the roof or a portable panel helps on rest days. Lithium batteries save weight but need compatible charging. Our guide on how a dual battery system works explains the options.

Compressors for airing down and up
Sand driving starts with letting tyres down and ends with pumping them back up before Rainbow Beach Road. A decent compressor can pull a lot of current, and running it through a cigarette socket or thin wire leads to melted plugs and slow inflation. Most owners fit an Anderson plug wired straight to the battery with heavy cable and a fuse near the battery. Our guide on what size cable you need for 12V helps you choose the right size.

Salt and sand underneath
Every beach run coats the underside of the vehicle in wet sand and salt water. It packs into the connectors on rear lights, trailer sockets, reversing sensors and the earth straps on the chassis. Left alone, corrosion creeps up inside the wires and causes faults that come and go. Rinse the underbody thoroughly with fresh water after each trip, then check exposed plugs and earths every few months and protect them with dielectric grease.

Winches and recovery
Soft sand, washouts and the tide around Mudlo Rocks catch out experienced drivers as well as first-timers. An electric winch draws very high current, so it needs heavy cables, a solid isolator and a battery in good condition. Salt attacks winch terminals and control boxes quickly, and a winch that fails halfway through a recovery is dangerous. Inspect the cables and connections before each trip and run the winch briefly to check it still works.

Camp lights that survive the salt
LED camp lights draw little power, but cheap fittings and rough wiring cause most of the faults seen after a beach trip. Use tinned cable, crimp and heat-shrink every join and fuse each circuit. A small switch panel near the second battery keeps it tidy. Mount lights where they won't be hit by gear or dunked in spray. Our guide on crimping wire connectors helps you make joins that last.

Rainbow Beach auto electrical questions
Do I need a permit to drive on the beach from Rainbow Beach?
Yes. Driving on the Cooloola beaches needs a vehicle access permit from Queensland Parks and Wildlife, bought before you drive, and number plates are checked by cameras. K'gari needs its own permit too. The Inskip Peninsula doesn't need a vehicle permit, although camping there needs a camping permit. Check the current conditions report before heading out.
Why does my car fridge keep switching off on beach trips?
Usually the voltage at the fridge is dropping too low. Thin cable, a loose connection or a tired battery can all do it, and on hot days the fridge runs harder, so a weak setup shows up quickly. Check the cable size, every connection and the battery's health. A DC-DC charger feeding a good second battery is the most reliable fix.
Local tip for Rainbow Beach
Plan every beach drive around the tide. Queensland Parks and Wildlife advises driving at or close to low tide and avoiding the two hours either side of high tide, and Mudlo Rocks near town is a known trouble spot. Carry recovery gear, a tyre gauge and a compressor, and give the vehicle a thorough freshwater rinse underneath as soon as you're home.
