Noosa

Noosa runs from the holiday beaches of Noosa Heads, Sunshine Beach and Peregian Beach, along the river at Noosaville and Tewantin, and inland to the railway towns of Cooroy and Pomona. Auto electrical work here covers salt air, boat trailers, beach 4WDs, holiday cars that sit idle, hybrids and EVs, and farm and towing work in the hinterland.

Suburbs in Noosa

Noosa Shire left the Sunshine Coast Region in 2014 and runs its own council again. The coastal side packs Noosa Heads, Noosaville, Tewantin, Sunshine Beach and Peregian Beach around the Noosa River, Lake Weyba and Noosa National Park, with holiday traffic, boats and sea breezes. Tewantin is also the ferry crossing to the beach drive on Noosa North Shore. Inland, Cooroy and Pomona sit on the North Coast railway beside the Bruce Highway, surrounded by acreage, small farms and state forest. The work shifts from corrosion and boat gear near the water to towing and farm vehicles inland.

Common auto electrical jobs in Noosa

Salt, sand, boats and holiday driving make up much of the auto electrical work across Noosa, with towing and rural jobs in the hinterland.

Living with the sea breeze

From Sunshine Beach to the river mouth at Noosa Heads, onshore winds carry salt over streets and car parks. It settles on battery terminals, earth points and exposed connectors, and turns into crusty corrosion that causes hard starting and odd electrical faults. Cars parked outdoors near the beach suffer most. Clean and protect the terminals a couple of times a year and check the main earth straps. Our guide to cleaning corroded battery terminals shows the process.

Beach driving on Noosa North Shore

The ferry from Tewantin takes 4WDs across the Noosa River to the beach drive up to Teewah, with a vehicle access permit needed before you drive. Salt spray, sand and soft beach driving hit the electrical system hard. Wiring gets wet, fridges run for days and plugs fill with sand. Rinse the underside after each trip, but keep water away from the engine bay electrics. Check plugs, earths and lights before the next trip. Our guide on how to wire an Anderson plug helps with replacement plugs.

Boat trailers on the river

Trailer boats are a big part of life along the Noosa River, Lake Weyba and Lake Cooroibah. Every dip in the water at the ramp shortens the life of trailer lights and wiring. Sealed LED lights, tinned cable and a well-greased plug last much longer. Disconnect the trailer before backing into the water if your setup allows, and check the lights before you head home. Our guide on why trailer lights stop working covers common faults.

Hybrids and EVs on holiday roads

Hybrids and electric vehicles are common around Noosa, both locally owned and in rental fleets. They still have a 12 volt battery that powers the computers and lets the car start, and when it goes flat the car won't wake up. Many hybrids use smaller batteries in the boot or under a seat. Testing and replacing the 12 volt battery is a normal job, but the high voltage system and its orange cables are for licensed professionals only. Our guide on car battery types explains the differences.
