Caloundra

The Caloundra end of the Sunshine Coast runs from the beaches and canals beside the Pumicestone Passage, inland through new estates like Baringa, to the railway towns under the Glass House Mountains. The work ranges from salt-affected wiring and boat trailers on the coast to caravans, family 4WDs and farm utes in the hinterland.

Caloundra at a glance

Suburbs in Caloundra

Caloundra is the old seaside town centre around Bulcock Street, with Kings Beach on the headland and Golden Beach and the Pelican Waters canals along the Pumicestone Passage. Behind them, Currimundi, Little Mountain and Caloundra West spread either side of Caloundra Road, and Caloundra West holds an industrial estate and the aerodrome. Baringa is one of the newest suburbs, part of the Aura development. Across the Bruce Highway, Landsborough, Beerwah and Glass House Mountains are small hinterland towns on the railway line. The coast brings salt and boats, while the hinterland brings longer drives, towing and acreage.

Common auto electrical jobs in Caloundra

Across the Caloundra area, the jobs change with the distance from the water: corrosion and trailers near the passage, family vehicles and towing in the estates, and work utes out west.

Salt air from the surf beaches and the passage

From Kings Beach round to Golden Beach, cars spend a lot of time parked within sight of salt water. Onshore breezes leave a fine film on everything under the bonnet, and it gathers on battery posts, fuse box lids and earth points. The first signs are usually small: a slow start on a cool morning, a dim headlight or a sensor fault that comes and goes. A clean and a protective coat on terminals and exposed plugs every six months keeps most of it in check. Our guide on cleaning corroded battery terminals walks through it.

Boat trailers on the Pumicestone Passage

The passage between the mainland and Bribie Island is calm water that suits small boats, and ramps along the Golden Beach foreshore get steady use. Every launch dips the trailer lights and plug into salt water, so failures are common. Sealed LED lights, tinned cable and a fresh plug every few seasons last much longer than old globe-type lights. Give the trailer a freshwater rinse after each trip and check the lights before you leave home, not at the ramp.

Caravans and camping rigs heading north or west

Plenty of households here own a van or a camper, and the Bruce Highway is the way out to everywhere. Towing a long way shows up weak spots in the charging system, especially when a fridge runs the whole trip. A DC-DC charger, correctly sized cable and good Anderson plug connections make a big difference to what arrives at the van battery. Our guide to why a caravan battery isn't charging while towing explains the usual causes.

Air conditioning that struggles in summer traffic

Queues on Caloundra Road and Nicklin Way are when a weak air conditioning system shows itself. If the air goes from cold to lukewarm as you slow down, check the electrical side first: the condenser fan, its relay and fuse, and the pressure switch wiring. Those are jobs an auto electrician can test. If the system needs refrigerant recovered or recharged, that part must be done by a licensed technician.
